How to prepare for a possible escape?

Being prepared for the possibility of an escaping bird

Although we don’t plan on losing our bird, we suggest you still take certain precautions:

• Upon arrival at home, take a picture of your bird. If you lose him, a photo will be required to make a poster or to claim him.

• If possible, make a video of your bird. It may be, in some cases, be posted on YouTube.

• Record the sounds that your bird makes on a voice recorder. This may be helpful to attract him.

• Write the number of his leg band if he has one, take a picture of it and keep it in a safe place as it will prove that the bird belongs to you. And most importantly, do not reveal this information.

• Have a transporting bird cage ready at all times and familiarize your bird with that carrier in order to have him getting in it without fear. This habit can also save his life in case of fire.

• Teach your bird to climb on a perch or on a long pole. This can be very useful for recovering him when he is too high to get in the house, but it could also be used outside to prevent you from climbing in order to retrieve him.

• It is important to teach your bird to come to you, whether or not his wings are clipped.

• He must also learn to step UP on demand, either with you or with other people, because if manage to get outside, it is possible that someone else finds him.

• Some birds are even trained to tell their address and phone number.

It is better to be prepared for the possibility of your bird escaping rather than being caught off guard when it happens.
