Le probl\u00e8me le plus aggravant et le plus courant associ\u00e9 aux perroquets, c’est la sur-vocalisation qui peut facilement \u00eatre \u00e9vitable. C’est souvent le premier aspect auquel les gens pensent avant d\u2019envisager acheter (ou non) un perroquet. D’un point de vue biologique, la vocalisation sert \u00e0 plusieurs fins: avertir les autres oiseaux de la pr\u00e9sence et\/ou du territoire d’un individu, localiser d’autres partenaires de la vol\u00e9e et communiquer entre eux, cr\u00e9er un appel d’avertissement ou une alarme pour les pr\u00e9dateurs potentiels d\u00e9tect\u00e9s, etc…<\/p>\n

Les oiseaux de compagnie, qui crient sans cesse sans raison apparente autre que pour attirer l’attention des humains qui les entourent, apprennent ce comportement par le biais du renforcement n\u00e9gatif. Tous les oiseaux vocalisent pendant environ 15 \u00e0 20 minutes deux fois par jour, g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement \u00e0 l’aube et au cr\u00e9puscule. Ceci est inn\u00e9 dans leur comportement naturel et ne peut \u00eatre \u00e9vit\u00e9. Lorsque la plupart des oiseaux arrivent dans leur nouveau foyer, ils ont tendance \u00e0 \u00eatre calmes et r\u00e9serv\u00e9s pendant les premiers jours ou la premi\u00e8re semaine. Le nouveau propri\u00e9taire pense souvent que c’est la personnalit\u00e9 normale de son animal de compagnie. Par cons\u00e9quent, une fois que son oiseau commence \u00e0 crier, \u00e0 couiner ou quoi d’autre, il a tendance soit \u00e0 r\u00e9pondre verbalement \u00e0 l’oiseau, soit \u00e0 couvrir la cage avec une couverture (vieux truc inutile; beaucoup \u00e9tant mal inform\u00e9s mais que plusieurs propri\u00e9taires de perroquets ne jurent que par cela). Bien s\u00fbr, au cours des semaines suivantes, parler \u00e0 l’oiseau ne fonctionne plus, alors ils le laissent ensuite sortir. Finalement, le bruit se transforme en un festival de cris jusqu’\u00e0 ce que le propri\u00e9taire ne puisse plus le g\u00e9rer. Des milliers de perroquets de compagnie sont relocalis\u00e9s et\/ou abandonn\u00e9s \u00e0 cause de cela.<\/p>\n

La r\u00e8gle d\u2019or pour pr\u00e9venir et corriger les hurlements est de ne JAMAIS y r\u00e9pondre de quelque mani\u00e8re que ce soit<\/strong>. Ne regardez pas votre oiseau, ne lui parlez pas, ne lui donnez pas de friandises ou de jouets s’il vocalise (sauf si l’oiseau apprend \u00e0 parler et que vous souhaitez r\u00e9compenser ses efforts). Tout type de r\u00e9action, qu’elle soit n\u00e9gative ou positive, apprend seulement \u00e0 votre animal que s’il crie assez longtemps et assez fort, il attirera votre attention.<\/p>\n

Comme pour la plupart des choses, la pr\u00e9vention est le meilleur outil pour faire face \u00e0 ce probl\u00e8me. Il est beaucoup plus facile d\u2019ignorer 15 minutes de cris d\u2019oiseaux l\u00e9g\u00e8rement forts que de vivre avec 50 ans de cris intenses.<\/p>\n

The most aggravating and common problem associated with parrots, and often the first issue people think about before considering to buy (or not) one, over-vocalization is entirely preventable. From a biological standpoint vocalizing serves several purposes; to notify other birds of an individual’s presence and\/or territory, to locate other flock mates and communicate with them, to create a warning call or alarm for potential predators that have been detected, etc…<\/p>\n

Pet birds who screaming incessantly for no apparent reason other than to get the attention of the humans around them are actually taught the behaviour through negative reinforcement. All birds will vocalize for about 15-20 minutes twice a day, typically at dawn and dusk. This is innate in their natural behaviour and cannot be avoided. When most birds arrive at their new home they tend to be quiet and reserved for the first few days to a week. The new owner often believes this to be the normal personality of their pet therefore once their bird begins to scream, squawk or what not they tend to either respond to the bird verbally or cover the cage with a blanket (and old useless trick many poorly informed parrot owners still swear by). Of course over the next few weeks talking to the bird doesn’t work anymore, so next they let the bird out. Eventually the noise snowballs into a scream fest until the owner cannot handle it. Thousands of pet parrots are re-homed and given up because of this.<\/p>\n

The golden rule for preventing and fixing over-vocalization is NEVER respond to it in any way or fashion. Do not look at your bird, talk to it, give it any treat or toy if it is vocalizing (the exception would be if the bird is learning how to talk and you want to reward it’s efforts). Any kind of reaction either negative or positive only teaches your pet that eventually if they scream long and hard enough they will win your attention.<\/p>\n

Like most things prevention is the best tool in dealing with a problem. It is much easier to ignore 15 minutes of slightly loud bird calls then live with 50 years of intense screaming.<\/p>\n
